Nintendogs +Cats (3DS): How To Unlock New Breeds And Other Questions Explained...

It has become apparent over the last few days that many of you are still searching for answers about the new Nintendogs + Cats 3DS game. Mini Gamers takes a look at some of the more common questions about the game and attempts to provide you with the answers.

Q1. How do I unlock new breeds of dog?

If your dog takes part in competitions with opponents whose breeds have not yet become unlocked, and if your dog wins First Place in the competition, then there is a good chance that the opponents' breeds will become unlocked the next time you visit the kennels.

Rather annoyingly, this game does not tell you when a new breed becomes available, so it is worth checking the kennels regularly to see if a new breed has become unlocked. Please note, however, that if new breeds have recently become unlocked, it may be some time before the method above will unlock any more breeds.

Q2. How can I make money in Nintendogs + Cats?

There are different ways to make money in Nintendogs + Cats. For example, you can sell any unwanted items back to the Second-Hand Store. This can also include items found when you are walking your dog.

Enter your dog in the Daily Competions. The more skilled your dog gets at each competition, the higher they will progress and the more money you will earn.  You can enter each competition twice a day and can make several hundred pounds in this way.

If you have more than one dog, each dog can enter a competition twice a day, which means that you will make even more money over time.

If your dog wins the Nintendogs' Cup for the first time, they will get a Gold Crown along with their £500 prize money. This Crown is worth £1,500 when sold to the second-hand store.

However, please note that it is only possible to win the Gold Crown once for each of your dogs in each of the three competitions on offer. Once these crowns have been sold there is no way to earn them back again.

The other option for making money is to find Piggy Banks on your walks. If your dog is lucky enough to find a Piggy Bank, wait until you get home and then drop the piggy bank on the floor to break it open. You will unlock a random amount of money inside.

Q3. Can cats go for walks or take part in competitions too?

Unfortunately, the answer to this is no. Cats behave very much like their real counterparts in this game and pretty much do their own thing. We hate to say it, but cats do seem very much like the - well - underdogs in this game really.

It would have been nice if there had been a Cat Show competition in the game, but this has not been included. You might find that your cat randomly brings you a present every now and again, but that is about it.

Q4. I own the original Nintendogs game as well, is there a way to transfer or import my old dogs into the new Nintendogs + Cats game?

Again, the answer to this is no. Unfortunately, the two games are incompatible with each other and there is no way to import your old dog into the new game.

Q5. How many cats and dogs can I actually own in Nintendogs + Cats?

Although there are twenty-seven breeds of dogs and three breeds of cat in Nintendogs + Cats, you can only own a maximum of six pets in total. This includes three pets at home and a further three pets in the Hotel.

This is a stark contrast to the original Nintendogs game, which allowed players to keep up to eleven pets in one go, three at home and eight in the Dog Hotel.

Mini Gamers was very disapointed to learn that the number of pets had been reduced as this has a serious negative impact on the overall replay value of the game.

Q6. What is the 'Surprise Me' function about in Nintendogs + Cats?

The 'Surprise Me' option mixes together different colours and fur patterns to create several varients on the traditional fur patterns that are available within each of the main breeds of dogs and cats available in the game.  If you don't know what colour of dog you would prefer, select this option. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find!

Q7. Can Puppies and Kittens grow up or have their own puppies and kittens?

No, your puppies and kittens are designed to stay cute and adorable forever. If, however, you do want a game in which your dogs or cats can grow, you might want to check out the PETZ range of games on the Nintendo DS, but this is not available for the 3DS. Sorry.

Q8. Where can I find the 'Secret Path'?

The secret path does not always seem to appear in the same place within the game, although it almost always leads your dog to the Mountain trail. You must look for a signpost with a woman walking her dog on it. Select 'yes' when prompted and you will soon find yourself on the secret path, which means a lot more presents and items to sell.

Q9. Why are there Traffic Cones on my walks?

The Traffic Cones are actually a hidden mini-game. Guide your dog successfully through each of the coloured cones on your walk and you could find yourself rewarded with an extra present at the end of your walk. It takes practise though!

That marks the end of our Mini Gamers Nintendogs + Cats FAQ. We hope that you found it useful. If you would like to read more about this game, please take a look at our full hands-on review of the game.

In answer to the question from 24/04/2011, unfortunately it is not possible to make the next day start just by forwarding the time - we tried this and were disappointed to find that it does not alter the day at all. Sorry!

    1. Actually, if you change your time on the Nintendo 3DS to 2359 and enter the game, it will change over to the next day in the game and you can play the competitions again.

  4. I think this game is awesome. It would have been better if we could have 11 pets though... I had all of my pets planned out :( Now I have to cut out some of the pets I wanted...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yes, it would have been better to have more pets than less. Mini Gamers can't understand why they have given us 30 pets when we can only ever choose six. Maybe it is so we will buy another version of the game and have 12 pets - cynical viewpoint, maybe? Who knows!

Thank you for your comment though. We think this game is pretty awesome as well.

  6. Each path has it's own secret path that is parallel to it so there are 8 paths.the secret paths have different things on each side depending on what paths it's between.
In order from left to right
mountain(secret),mountain normal,Default(secret)[A mix between mountain and the default path],Default(normal),Town(secret)[possible a mix between default and town, i haven't used this path as much and i can't remember and it might even be on the other side of the normal town path],town(normal),Beach(normal) and beach(secret)[no buildings on left side]
Also the first four mentioned(including secret paths) don't have cones but some times your dog will find a present in the grass.
At the last part of all the paths, the road will fade back to the default path with your house at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hello glen24, you don't really sell your pets (unfortunately), but if you go to the hotel, you can choose the option to 'Donate' your pets. This will free up a space so that you can get a new dog/cat but won't earn you anymore money.

Thank you for your comment. Hope this helps.

  14. What are the chances of finding a promise ring? My friend has found the promise ring 3 times, I've never found it though, he has Golden Retriever Version, and so do I. But I have about 1000 more Trainer points than him. Is there any reason why? (about 6000 Trainer points)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hello, Person! Thank you for your comment.

We did not know about the Promise Ring until you mentioned it, so thanks!

We have done some research and discovered that the Promise Ring unlock is apparently linked to the special GOLD BAR item which becomes available when you have 10,600 Trainer Points and can be found in the Special BARC store along the Mountain trail.

The Gold Bar costs £9,999 but if you own one, it apparently 'increases your chances' of unlocking a Promise Ring. Although this isn't a definite way of unlocking the Promise Ring item, it is the best lead we've got.

Please note, we also discovered that if you have a Toy Poodle, it can apparently unlock the gold bar during walks without you having to pay for it, thus making it easier for you to find the Promise Ring item without spending all your virtual cash.

Hope that helps! Good luck in your search.

  17. Hello, anonymous.

According to our research, you need 3,600 Trainer Points to unlock a beagle puppy on the French Bulldog version.

    Hope that helps!

  19. How much does a Pomeranian cost? I am raising trainer points and money to buy one but I need a money goal.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hello, in answer to the question on the 06/08/11:

Yes, you must have the voucher card to get the Robo Pup item. You need at least 5000 Trainer Points before this item becomes available. The voucher can then be found in Mr. R's exchange items list.

In order to be able to exchange materials for the voucher, you will need the following items:

    Wood x7
    Metal x5
    Rubber x7
    Leather x7
    Plastic x7
    Stardust x3

Once you have the voucher, take it to the kennels and exchange it for your Robo Pup. Hope that helps!

In answer to the question from 07/08/11:

You can unlock the pomeranian puppy by collecting 2,200 Trainer Points. It costs £1,580 to buy. Hope that helps!

  32. In answer to question dated 8/8/11 re: BARK MODE. Yes, but it isn't called 'bark mode' anymore... basically, if you use the StreetPass function on your 3DS console, and you happen to meet friends (or even strangers) who also have a Nintendogs + Cats game - any version - there is a chance to get presents and meet with their pet, but it doesn't quite work in the same way as the old Bark Mode, hope that helps.

    1. Can you still unlock their dog breeds if they have a dog breed you don't have the option of getting?

      Delete
    2. Hi Squidney Bean, dog breeds are unlocked by entering and winning competitions, please see above for details, The Streetpass function allows you to get gifts and meet other pets and their owners, and may allow you to unlock new breeds, but the competitions are the best way to unlock new breeds. Hope that helps!

      Delete
  33. In answer to the question about HOW MANY DOGS ARE THERE IN THE BEGINNING?:

Each version of the game starts with 9 starter breeds. The actual starter breeds vary with each version. Thanks for your comment!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hello, Anonymous. In answer to whether there is a DOG PARK to practice in, the answer is yes.

Each of the basic walks (seaside, moutain trail or town) on your dog's walks contains one type of park, which are perfect for practising for the disc competitions.

Look for signs with arrows pointing to a place to either side of the road. Just steer your puppy over to that sign, and the game will ask if you want to stop at the location. The possible locations include the Park, Café, and Gym (where you can practise Lure Coursing, but this is accessible from the TOWN only).

If you meet other NPC's and their dogs whilst out for a walk, there is also a chance that you and your dog will get invited to go to one of the locations with the NPC as well. This is a good way of finding out where all the parks are.

    Hope that helps!

  35. Hello, in answer to the two questions about HOW TO DONATE A DOG OR CAT:

    Go to the HOTEL.

At the bottom of the hotel OPTIONS screen is a differently-coloured option which says DONATE. Choose the pet you wish to donate.

Tap this option. You will be asked if you are sure you want to donate your chosen pet.

Tap YES. You have now donated your pet.

    ReplyDelete
  36. In answer to HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE/WHERE TO FiND OUT:

If you tap the GO OUT option in the main screen, you will see your total amount of money displayed in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

It is also displayed when in the BARC STORE usually.

    Hope that helps!

  38. Hello, we have done some more research into the Promise Ring item and have found that Promise rings can sometimes be given to you by your cats.

If you have a cat and you leave Nintendogs + Cats on for over an hour but do not play with your pets during that time, you may find that your cat disappears from the screen.

Tap on his/her name tag and icon in the main menu screen and your cat will appear in front of you with a present tied with a blue ribbon. These sometimes happen to be Promise Rings, which can then be sold for £1000 at the second-hand store... Again, this isn't a definite way to get a promise ring but it is worth a try.

Failing that, why don't you ask your friend how he got the promise ring item?

    Good Luck!

  41. hello! i've been playing nintendogs french bulldog game for about a month, but i still have some questions, first off, in the notifications, every once in awhile it will tell me i have a visitor via spotpass, the first time it was president L Johnson, and his cute little beagles him and her, the second time spotpass notifs told me i have president hoover and his german sheperd king tut to meet, but when i went to the journal to meet him, intead i found myself in the park with President calvin coolidge and his jack russel terrier peter pan. any explination as to why i got the wrong president and his dog in spotpass?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Er, unfortunately, the UK versions of this game do not come with the presidential DLC that the US versions have, as we are a UK-based blogsite, we cannot help solve your issue at this time.

We did read on some 3DS/Nintendogs + Cats forums that the Presidents and their pets may be repeated over time, so there is still a chance that you can still get your meeting with President Hoover at a later date...

However, it sounds like it is most likely a software glitch and we would suggest that you report the problem to Nintendo as it might require a patch of some kind in order to correct it.

If anyone else from America has the French Bulldog version of this game and has experienced a similar problem, could you please let Mini Gamers know so that we can help resolve this issue.

Sorry we can't be more helpful! Thank you for your comment.

  43. HI! i bought the poodle version just under a week ago and am Loving it! just one little question... can you only unlock ALL of the breeds if you go onto streetpass or are there other ways to accomplish this?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Another US resident looking for an answer about my very own Hoover/Coolidge glitch. Exact same problem here. Maybe I should call the helpline.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Anonymous.

All the cats behave in a similar fashion in the game really - playing with cat wands, climbing on furniture. Mini Gamers originally had one of each type when first reviewing the game and found no major differences between the three breeds.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Jane, thank you for your comment. It definitely sounds like there is a glitch in the programme. Calling the helpline seems like a very good idea under the circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  48. (i'm the same person with the presidential spotpass trouble who has yet to make an account)thank you for the recommendation! i asked one of my friends who recently got the game, he said the same thing happened to him, it must have just been a glitch in the spotpass notif or something. but now i'm a little curious, what kinds of things are sent to spotpass in places where u.s presidents(and thier oddly named dogs) mean absolutly nothing?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hello, Anonymous.

If you look at the first question in this FAQ, you will see that you can UNLOCK ALL THE BREEDS by entering your dog in competitions and winning first place (see above for more details)or via streetpass as you mentioned.

Hope that helps! Thank you for your comment.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hello again, (person with the presidential DLC problem,) glad you found our comments of some use.

In answer to your question about what things are sent via spotpass outside of Japan and US, the answer is absolutely nothing as there does not seem to be much spotpass content in the EU at present, and no spotpass data for this game in the UK. Hopefully Nintendo will rectify this soon.

    Thank you for your comment!

He does not have the gold bar, and now he's found 5 promise rings and I've still found none.

I was there when he found them. He found them on regular walks while going through cones. Now he has 6 and I have the gold bar and I've only found 1. He hasn't found any with his cat.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well there is kind of 31 breeds if you include robopup :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hello, anonymous with the PROMISE RING difficulty, as we said before, the suggestions we made were based on our research about the game, but were not definite ways to get the item you seek.

As you said that your friend got the item whilst completing the 'traffic cone' mini game (walk your dog through each of the coloured traffic cones without moving or disturbing any of them to get a prize), it would seem that this is the way to unlock the Promise Ring item?

Find out which walk your friend goes on when he unlocks the promise rings, as that might help.

If anyone has a solution about how to unlock Promise Rings in the Golden Retriever edition of Nintendogs and Cats, please leave us a comment and let us know...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hello, Yes, 31 Dogs. Have seen the Robopup on Youtube. Looks cute! Haven't got enough materials for Mini Gamers to unlock it yet though... Thanks for your comment.

    Replies
    1. to get FREE puppies from the dogs you have, first find the rose(if you can, find two). Then, stock up on formula and dry food. Buy two dogs of the same breed (they can be different colors) and buy them on the SAME DAY! They have to be male and female. If you have both roses, give them each one. If you only have one, give it to the girl and by the boy a red collar. feed them only dry food and formula with no treats, no baths, no walks, and no competitons. You will want a brush and every day, brush the girl and when you start noticing she's starting getting fatter when you brush her, then she's pregnant. Soon, when you get on the game, you'll have a puppy looking like one of the parents. Also, don't put any other pets with the pair or the mother will lose the puppy when she's pregnant. Rose can be found on walks.

    2. That doesn't work in the nintendogs plus cats. You can't breed them. Only in The original nintendogs.

      Delete
    3. That doesn't work. Honey don't try it. It only works in the original nintendogs game as that's why we could get 11 rather than 6x

      Delete
  56. Hi Anonymous, glad you are enjoying the game. No,there is only a few ways to earn money in the game - have about 3 dogs first. With three dogs, you can enter the competitions six times (twice per competition) and start to accrue some good money... The cat won't be far behind.

    Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Game is overall more fun than the original. The graphics are much better and everything is more realistic; the walks are exponentially better.

Only six pets though, which is a massive dislike. Add more breeds and a new species but take off five slots? Not your best move, Nintendo.

  87. Hello Anonymous, TO GET YOUR DOG TO SIT FOR 7 SECONDS... it will take a lot of patience to train your dog to sit for the required length of time.

Just keep repeating the sit command and waving the treat. Wait until the treat icon flashes red and/or makes a noise before feeding the treat to your puppy. Hope that helps! Thank you for your comment.

  88. Dear Paige, Sorry but Mini Gamers cannot reply to private emails... However, in answer to your question,HOW MANY DAYS ARE NEEDED, the answers are as follows:

    Beagle = 15 days play

Maltese = between 11 and 15 days play depending on which version you have.

Mini Pinscher = between 11-25 days depending on which version you have.

Pug = 25 days of play.(6 days with Toy Poodle version)

Shibu Inu = 31 days of play.

    Hope that helps!

  89. Hi, i was reading and i know you can unlock diffrent dogs through competitions and by winning first place, but what about items, i still have the regular shampoo and treats, but on a walk my dog found some suprize treats and he also found a "Premium Shampoo", any ideas on how to unlock these items for buying in the store?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hello, yes, items are unlocked by earning Trainer points, which mean that items can become unlocked depending on how many days you have played the game. Please note that the specific number of days needed to unlock each item varies depending on which version of the game you have.

Premium shampoo can be unlocked by playing for approx 19 days, which equates to around 5000 Trainer Points. Not sure about surprise biscuits though.

Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment!

  91. how to make your dog backflip and front flip?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hello, in order to successfully complete a backflip, your dog must first have fully mastered the 'sit' and 'jump' commands.

When your dog is in a sitting position, order him/her to jump. Your dog should then do a backflip. say 'backflip' when the trick icon appears.

Keep repeating the steps until your dog recognises the new trick as a 'backflip'.

A front flip is similar, but requires your dog to have fully learnt the 'Roll Over' and 'Jump' commands.

When your dog is in the 'Roll Over' position, command him/her to 'jump'. Your dog should then perform a front flip. Say 'Front flip' when the trick icon appears. Keep repeating until your dog recognises the 'Front Flip' command.

    Hope that helps!

  95. how can you make your dog go faster in the lure coursing?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hi anonymous, you need to make sure that your dog is a suitable distance from the Lure, so that they can't leap on it.

Also, keep pressing the lure so that it squeaks. this will encourage your dog to keep moving.

It will take time to build up your dog's speed and stamina, so try not to pull the lure too fast along the track for the first few competitions, or your dog won't be able to catch up with you.

Please note that some dogs (such as King Charles Cavellier spaniel) are better at Lure coursing than others.

Hope that helps! Thank you for your comment.

  99. Hi! In answer to the question of why the dog CAN'T PERFORM BACKFLIP: Mini Gamers has not experienced this problem for ourselves, but it sounds similar to Milla's problem (see above).

Could it be that the game has a slight inherent fault? If anyone else has experienced a similar problem, or if anyone has a possible solution please leave a comment and let us know...

  103. how do you make your puppy bring the disc on its own?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hi! Your puppy learns with practise, in the early competitions, tap the stylus on the screen and call your dog back to you, but practise in the local parks by calling your dog's name and getting them to return the disc to you.

Then, slowly try calling your dog's name in the competition to get them to bring you the disc, or try a combination of tapping and calling if you prefer.

As the bond between you and your puppy strethens, and as the puppy's stamina improves, it should start returning the disc to you without you having to call it.

Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment!

    1. Hello anonymous, I think you will find the answers to your questions have already been provided in the article above, except for are there any other cat breeds and the one about the golden retriever, which Mini Gamers will answer now:

No, only three breeds of cats but many different fur patterns to choose from.

Yes, ALL 30 dog breeds are available to be unlocked in each version of the game. You will need 9,800 trainer points to unlock this breed in your version of the game.

As for your other questions about dogs having puppies and/or kittens, or how to make more money, please see questions 2 and 7 in our FAQ above.

  111. Hi, Minigamers, my question is:
Which dog breed is the best at Disc Competitions?
The dig I have right now is a Shiba Inu and she's not too bad, but despite constant practice, she can't catch the disc once it reached the last two coloured sections of the contest field.
I know that certain dogs (such as the King Charles, I believe), are naturally better at contests such as the Lure Course. So, is there a breed like this for the Disc Competition?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Mery,

Smaller dogs such as Jack Russell, Pug and/or King Charles Cavellier puppies are best for the disc competition, although larger dogs like Labrador or boxers seem to do well too.

It does take plenty of time for your dog to gain the maximum stamina to win the higher competions.

Have you considered training her with a boomerang (rather than a disc). This teaches her to jump for the item rather than just catch it, meaning higher points in disc competitions.

Also, remember to pet her whenever she successfully brings the boomerang/disc back to you.

Furthermore, try to refrain from using the PRO DISC. This disc is only for dogs who can score 11 or more in one throw during competitions and usually ends up being to fast for untrained dogs to catch...

Hope that helps! Thank you for your comment.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually, the best dog for both disc and lure competitions seems to be a King Charles Cavellier Spaniel, but other dogs such as Pug, labrador or boxer do just as well in either of these competitions.

    2. well i have a dog and she is a jackrussle and always get in 2 or 3 place in the nintendog cup what do i do? she gets distracted

      Delete
    3. Hi faithwolf, You don't actually mention which competition you are refering to, but if it is the lure competition, then pressing the horn at regular intervals whilst she is running should stop her from getting distracted.

If it is the disc competion, your dog needs more training - take her to the park and practise with a BOOMERANG rather than a disc. This is slower than a disc and helps to teach her to jump for the item, which means increased points during competitions. Remember to pet her and feed her with treats each time she successfully brings the disc back to you. Eventually, she will learn that she gets attention for bringing the disc back to you straight away, and she should get less and less distracted.

Thank you for your comment! Hope this helps!

Recently I got a dalmation named Skye I went through all of the normal beginning stuff (calming the dog, naming it) but now whenever the other dogs interact with her they'll whine and lower their tails. Rose barks at Skye alot to. Do Bear and Rose hate Skye? if so what do I do?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Snxwolfcat, Lovely names for your dogs! In answer to your question, yes, it is possible for different dogs to dislike one another. Try petting each of your dogs in turn whenever you interact with them, so they know that you are giving them equal attention and not playing 'favourites'.

Also try some positive reinforcement by giving them treats when they play nicely together. It may take time for their behaviour to change, so don't expect instant friendships to form.

If, after a while the situation doesn't improve, try keeping Skye in the dog hotel rather than in the main game and bring her out to play on her own or with only one of the other dogs.

      Hope that helps!

    1. Hi Faithwolf, glad we could help you win the disc competition, that's fantastic...

      As for your cat problem:

it is possible for different pets to dislike one another. Try petting each of your pets in turn whenever you interact with them, so they know that you are giving them equal attention and not playing 'favourites'.

Also try some positive reinforcement by giving them treats when they play nicely together. It may take time for their behaviour to change, so don't expect instant friendships to form.

If, after a while the situation doesn't improve, try keeping Tom in the hotel rather than in the main game and bring him out to play on his own or with only one of the other pets.

  118. heya Mini gamers! Um i need help coz well ive been playing nintendogs + cats for a LONG LONG time! But today i just checked out this site and i saw this comment, that said 'how can i get my dog to do a back flip or front flip!?' well i have the same problem but how do you do it because its not on my dog's (lucky)trick list! So my main questions are, how do you get frontflip or backflip onto your dogs trick list? and Do you need any Onwer points to get it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Anonymous, the answer to your question is that you don't need front flip or back flip to be in your trick list, as these are so-called hidden tricks which use a combination of tricks that your dog has already learnt.

Thus, to get Lucky to do a backflip, get your dog to sit, and then command him/her to 'jump' she/he should then perform a backflip.

Say 'backflip' when the trick icon appears, and keep repeating this until your dog has learnt the trick.

For a front flip, command your dog to 'lie down, and then 'jump'. Lucky will then perform a front flip.

Say "Front flip" when the trick icon appears, and keep repeating this until your dog has learnt the trick.

Please note, that before your dog can do a backflip or front flip, it must have first fully learnt the 'jump' 'lie down', 'roll over', and 'sit' commands.

      Hope that helps!

Also for lures at 900 trainer points you should be able to get the banana lure at the pet supply an the pro lure at1600 owner points.
