Sony Announces 75 Possible Launch Game Titles For The PS Vita

Sony have reportedly released a list of 75 videogame titles which should become available when its latest handheld console, the PS Vita, launches early next year. However, we also ought to point out that these games are all currently 'work-in-progress' and thus it is possible that some of the games included on the list might change by the actual launch date.

Futhermore, the console is set to launch in Japan in December this year, and it is yet unclear whether some of these games will be exclusively available in the Japanese launch, or whether the same games will also make it to the European release as well.

Nevertheless, the list includes games from a wide range of genres including educational titles, which is unusual on a Sony handheld, and thus it looks as though Sony are determined to cater to as many gamers as possible from day one of the PS Vita launch.

The list may help to promote the PS Vita to users of the original PSP handhelds, who may have been worried about a lack of decent software at launch.

The PS Vita's predecessor, the PSP Go wa criticised by gamers, mainly for two reasons: Firstly, the console did not have enough core titles to sustain interest from the handheld gaming market, and secondly, the PSP Go only featured downloadable games, with no UMD slot, which meant that there were no hard copies of the software available for purchase anywhere.

With Sony's announcement that it will be producing PS Vita games on a new type of memory stick called an 'NVG card', and now a detailed list of possible launch titles, it seems as though Sony is determined to correct past mistakes and make the PS Vita into a truly memorable console. However, only time will tell if the gaming community is ready to accept such a device.

PS Vita Will Have Downloadable Games Confirms Sony...

Sony has announced that all games on the new PS Vita handheld will be available in a download format.

Whilst showcasing the latest device at Gamescom 2011 earlier this week, Sony confirmed that the latest addition to Sony's handheld gaming consoles features no UMD slot, and as a result, all PS Vita games will have the ability to be purchased and downloaded directly from the Playstation Network Store.

However, unlike its predecessor, the PSP Go, which was criticised for not having enough downloadable software in the PSN store, ALL PS Vita games will be made available for download from the store upon their release.

Sony also announced that older PSP titles would be available for download onto the new PS Vita console as well, making it fully backwards compatible with previous PSP  downloadable games and software in the Playstation Network Store.

However, for gamers who were worried that they would not be able to purchase their software in a highstreet store, Sony has also revealed that it will now be producing games on a special memory stick, called an NVG Card, which will now replace the old UMD format, which was used on the older PSP handhelds.

It has not been revealed what 'NVG' actually stands for yet, but we can tell you that the cards look like normal memory sticks, but will contain game data and extra space for save information etc.

The NVG Cards will come in two sizes - 2GB for smaller games and 4GB for larger games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss. These cards will be sold in the highstreet for purchase, which is good news for all those who hate downloads.

There were still no announcements regarding the recommended retail price of the console or its possible European release date(s). Nevertheless Sony did announce that the PS Vita would utilise some free Social Networking applications such as Facebook and Twitter.

Furthermore, the company were also quick to deny recent rumours that the size of memory on the PS Vita had been halved from its original specifications.

Thus, it seems that plans for the PS Vita are shaping-up rather nicely at present. Remember to keep checking in with the Mini Gamers blogsite for more news about this topic as it develops.

Sony Will Not Make Its Winter 2011 PS Vita Debut Release Date...

Sony has announced that it will not be able to make its original PS Vita release date. The PS Vita was expected to be released by Christmas 2011 in many regions, in order to take advantage of the holiday sales. However, this is no longer the case.

In a  recent statement issued to the Associated Press, Sony's Executive Vice President, Kazuo Hirai confirmed that the American and European PS Vita launches would now be delayed until the beginning of 2012, and it is still not clear whether the PS Vita will even launch in Japan by the end of the current year.

Hirai claimed that the reason for the delay is so that the new console could launch with "solid game software offerings timed with the hardware launches." [sourced from: http://money.msn.com/business-news/article.aspx?feed=AP&date=20110804&id=14046022]

This will come as disappointing news to the many Sony PSP fans who were expecting to find a shiny new PS Vita at the bottom of their Christmas Stockings, but hopefully means that the new console can have a stronger launch campaign, which should help it to avoid the sales pitfalls that the Nintendo 3DS console has recently succumbed to.

More details about the PS Vita are expected to be announced at Sony's Gamescom conference on the 16th of August 2011.

Sony To Drop PSP Digital Comic Service...

The Sony PSP Digital Comic Service is to be dropped just seventeen months after its initial launch. According to a message on the Official Playstation Blog, which warned users that the latest comic update would also be the last.

Playstation Store director, Grace Chen, claimed that the Digital Comic Service would no longer feature any new comics after the 6th of July 2011, but was quick to add that users could: "continue to download any of the over 4000 existing comics from the comic store as usual..." [sourced from:http://us.playstationcomics.com/main/blog/weekly-update-060711.html]

Just to confirm, although it has been announced that Sony intends to 'drop' the service, (which would seems to suggest that the service is to cease,) the truth is that the PSP digital comics that are already in the store will remain unchanged and can still be downloaded as normal, but there will be NO MORE NEW STOCK of comics after the above date.

However, the playstation blog also mentioned that the Digital Comic Service would continue on other Sony products, although no specific details were given at this point.

Mini Gamers is saddened by the news, but we are also left wondering whether there might be plans to move the Digital Comic Service to the newest Sony handheld, the PS Vita, which is set to debut in December 2011.

    Wireless: Mobile Network
    Connectivity (3G), IEE 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
The PS Vita is set to revolutionise the way that Playstation fans access and play their games. The CEO of Consumer services and Marketing, Kazuo Hirai, proudly introduced the new console at E3 2011 last night. He said: "Vita means 'life' and the PS Vita blurs the lines between entertainment and real life..." and he claimed that the PS Vita would also lead the way in offering gamers a: "Truly unique social experience."

The PS Vita contains a powerful CPU processor and greater memory, making its graphics closer to the PS3 in comparison. This means that there will now be better interconnectivity between Sony's favourite home console and the new handheld device.

For example, the PS Vita will now use the 'Cloud Saves' feature usually found on the PS3 console. This means that players can save their game and then connect it up to their PS3 console and continue playing from where they left off.

Several PS Vita games were presented during the ninety-minute Sony conference, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a brand new Uncharted game.  This game was a good example of how the new PS Vita functions could be put to good use.

For example, the main character, Nathan Drake can now be made to jump simply by tapping on the touchscreen. Players can also make Drake move along several ledges or chasms easily by 'drawing' a safe route for him with their finger.  Enemies can be attacked by using the traditional PSP button system or by tapping on them via the touchscreen. Weapons can also be collected via this method.

Modnation Racers for the PS Vita demonstrated how the multiple touch points on the rear touchpad can be used to customise tracks. In the PS Vita version of the popular racing game, pressing on various points of the touchpad can create mountaneous peaks and place trees, while tapping on the front touchscreen can create lakes or rivers and create bends in the racing track.

Finally, the PS Vita version of Little Big Planet uses the new 'tilt' functions of the motion sensors. Many of the new levels will include areas where the console will need to be tilted in order for the player to proceed.

Furthermore, players can use the new front and rear cameras to take a photo of themselves, which will then be used to create their sackboy/sackgirl character.

The Little Big Planet toolbox has also been enhanced. Players can now draw items such as bridges or steps on the touchscreen  and they will then be added into your own created levels.

These major titles will all be available for the PS Vita at launch, and CEO of Sony Entertainment America, Jack Tretton revealed that there were a lot more quality games in the pipeline: "We currently have more than eighty [PS Vita] game titles in development by top developers including EA, Ubisoft, THQ, Activision and Capcom."

The PS Vita  will debut some time in December 2011, just in time for the Christmas market. There will be two types of the console available at launch, PS Vita with 3G connectivity, which will retail for around £185, and PS Vita with standard Wi-fi connectivity, which will suit tighter budgets by retailing at around £155.

In conclusion, the latest Sony offering is certainly an intriguing little console. It is impossible to tell how well it will be recieved at launch, but with promises of Social Gaming functions and Augmented Reality gaming on top of the main console features, the PS Vita promises to provide gamers with: "An experience you need to see - and feel - to believe..." [Jack Tretton, Sony America CEO]
