Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata Dies From Cancer Aged 55
Nintendo has today confirmed the sad news that its CEO and much-respected videogame programmer has died at the age of 55 from cancer. Rumours of Mr. Iwata's failing health first began to circulate back in 2014 when he was advised by doctors not to travel to E3, Los Angeles premiere gaming conference. Nevertheless, he underwent surgery and returned to work after a brief respite.
During his time as CEO, which began in 2002, Satoru Iwata was credited with the launch of many of Nintendo's successful products, including most notably its DS, 3DS and Wii consoles. He had recently began to refocus Nintendo gaming away from the console market and towards the 'mobile gaming' market, which is expected to double Nintendo's expected profits by providing quality Nintendo titles to the growing market of smartphones and tablet devices. Earlier this year, Nintendo signed an exclusive deal with mobile gaming company, DeNA, who will be tasked with bringing Nintendo's vision of high-quality Nintendo mobile games to life.
The untimely death of Mr.Iwata has shocked many of the company's fans, who have taken to social media sites to voice their tributes to the man who brought some truly innovative and creative products to the gaming community. Even Nintendo's closest rival, Sony Playstation paid its respects in a simple tweet, which reads: "Thank you for everything, Mr. Iwata." [sourced from: http://kotaku.com/the-video-game-community-pays-tribute-to-satoru-iwata-1717397315].
With the loss of its treasured CEO, Nintendo faces a difficult time ahead in its search for new Leadership. One thing is certain, however, Satoru Iwata was a man of rare talent and vision. His leadership helped Nintendo to produce its popular line of easy-to-use, family-friendly consoles, which brought the joys of videogaming to even wider audiences. He will be sadly missed by the gaming community and he has left some very big shoes for his successor to fill.

New DS and 3DS Games For January 2012...
January 2012 has officially begun, and with it comes a lot of new gaming titles for us to enjoy. This is the Mini Gamers January 2012 release calendar, a short guide to what should be available for our handheld consoles by the end of the month...
January 2012:
DS GAMES

JEWEL MATCH 2
Fans of Jewel Match will be treated to this brilliant sequel game, which is due to be released on the 13th of January 2012.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with this game, it involves matching rows of similar jewels in order to accrue points. Other 'Match-3' games of this type include the Bejeweled series, which has become very popular over the past five years.
Jewel Match 2 will feature over 150 levels and two game modes. There will also be a chance for players to unlock new spells and other bonuses or build beautiful castles.
Another Match-3 game is Heroes of Hallas 2: Olympia, which should be heading to the Nintendo DS console on the 30th of January 2012.
Players take on the role of an ancient ruler of a place called Olympia. Players must compete in Match-3 games in order to gather materials that will in turn help to restore the land to its former glory and unlock lots more interesting bonuses.
January 2012:
3DS GAMES
CRUSH 3D
Although this game was originally considered for cancellation because of poor 3DS sales figures, it seems as though Crush 3D has had a reprieve. Crush 3D is now scheduled for release on Friday the 13th January 2012.
Crush 3D is a new version of an existing PSP puzzle game, in which players can switch between a 2D or 3D world by simply crushing or flattening it.
The 3DS version promises over fifty challenging levels set across four separate environments. There is lots of bonus content to collect or unlock, and players can even use Streetpass to exchange gifts with friends.
WINTER SPORTS 2012:
Feel The Spirit
This is the first Winter Sports title on the 3DS, and it promises not to disappoint. Winter Sports 2012 features over fifty different challenges in six sporting disciplines. The game also features loads of slow-motion replays and unlockables.
Winter Sports 2012: Feel the Spirit is scheduled for release on the 20th January 2012.
REEL FISHING PARADISE 3D
Scheduled for release on January 20th 2012, Reel Fishing Paradise 3D has been rendered in full autostereoscopic 3D, to create a fishing simulation game like no other.
The game features fifteen different stages and features different fishing techniques, from Fly fishing to Bait fishing. Players must travel to different locations, where they can catch, keep and care for their fish in two 3D virtual fishtanks.
TALES OF THE ABYSS
The popular RPG game has its debut on the 3DS at last. Tales of the Abyss tells the story of Luke fon Fabre, sole heir to a family of aristocrats. Luke has been left with no memories of his past, following his kidnap almost seven years earlier.
Luke has been kept sheltered and spoilt by his family since his return, but suddenly finds himself thrust into the outside world, by the Order of Lorelei, keepers of the prophecy known as the 'Score'.
Luke must get along in this confusing and often hostile world. He knows nothing about those who might be his friends, or those who already are his enemies. Alone, Luke must learn of friendship and sacrifice, of duty and choice. Luke's actions could help to save the world in which he lives or destroy it.
Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS features special new animation and an 'ARTES' shortcut, which gives greater scope during battles. The game is scheduled for release on the 27th of January 2012.
Resident Evil: Revelations is scheduled for release on January 27th 2012. The game is set between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5, and the game will seek to test players through a variety of game mechanics, including a limited supply of ammo, and more emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving.
Thus, that marks the end of our January 2012 DS/ 3DS release calendar. We hope that you have found it interesting. Remember to check back with the Mini Gamers blogsite for more news and reviews after the games are released.

Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 - What Can We Expect?
The final installment of Lego Harry Potter (Years 5-7) is about to land onto the PSP and Nintendo DS/DSi and 3DS consoles. What can we expect from the game, and will Harry's 3DS debut be as popular as the other Lego titles before him?
Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 promises to be an family-fun, action-packed game from start to finish. Players can play through a total of twenty-four different events spread across the remaining titles of the Harry Potter books - Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and of course, The Deathly Hallows.
The game will also seek to build upon the various spells and incantations learnt in Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and will teach players to master more advanced magic including the Unforgivable Curses. in the fight against the evil Lord Voldermort and his army of Death Eaters.
The game will also introduce new locations including Godric's Hollow, The Ministry of Magic and Grimmauld Place, amongst others.
Although the gameplay varies very little between the various platforms, the 3DS version of Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 has the advantage of greater depth and stunning visuals to add to the adventure, and Mini Gamers sees no reason why this game shouldn't be as brilliant as the previous 3DS Lego titles - Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean
Official UK Trailer
Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 is set to launch in the UK on Friday the 18th of November 2011. Look out for the full review of the game shortly afterwards.

Game of the Week: Virtual Villagers - A New Home (DS/DSi)
Players must help to take care of a tribe of people after their previous home has been destroyed by a volcanic eruption, and they are now forced to work to rebuild their homes and the tribal population. The Nintendo DS version is actually a condensed volume of the first three games from the PC series.
Virtual Villagers does seem to naturally suit the Nintendo DS consoles, and Mini Gamers is surprised that there has not been a DS console release of this game until now.
The overall gameplay is simple: Players can assign tasks to the villagers. They can choose from a selection of jobs such as Farmer (grow new plants and crops), Priest (nuture the souls of your tribe, boost morale), Parent (give birth and raise children to adulthood), Builder (erect huts and other buildings for the tribe),or a Healer (to heal sick or wounded villagers) etc. This will help your tribe to grow, develop and settle into their new homes.
As this game is played in real-time and features a strong story progression, your tribe members will continue to learn new skills and grow in ability within the task that you have set for them, even if you are not playing the game - The tribe continues to function even when your DS/DSi is turned off!
The same can be said about the Villagers lifespans. Villagers who are born into the tribe will start off as babies and progress through childhood, adulthood and old age, where they will ultimately die.
However, it has to be said that the entire life process can be fulfilled quite quickly, so you might lose more inhabitants to death than you want to. Nevertheless, players do have the option to 'freeze time' overnight if they wish, which can be useful if you want to build a very skillful tribe or limit the amount of deaths or illnesses that occur whilst you are away from the DS console.
The game also features over sixty different puzzles for players to solve. Players must raise the villagers skills up to a specific level in order to solve puzzles, which takes a bit of time and patience, but is very rewarding, as these puzzles provide clues, which will then help the player to unlock the secrets of Mysterious Island.
Virtual Villagers: A New Home also contains a good selection of mini games, which can be completed to earn extra skill points or to speed up certain daily tasks. The mini games include tasks such rain-dancing, fruit-picking or fishing and even sawing wood, amongst others, and they help to add extra entertainment value to the game.
Official DS/DSi Trailer
In conclusion, this cute and gentle game will not suit everyone, but is likely to appeal to fans of strategy games and real-life virtual simulations such as Animal Crossing, Enchanted Folk or My Sims. The attention to detail about each villagers thoughts and feelings help to create a very realistic virtual environment and makes this an incredibly charming game.It has easy-to-understand controls, which also makes it a good game for younger gamers to enjoy, but does not exclude older gamers who are looking for a simple and fun little game for those spare few hours. Overall rating: 8/10.

Professor Layton VS. Phoenix Wright TGS 2011 Trailer Revealed...
A new trailer for the 3DS Puzzle/Adventure collaboration, known simply as Professor Layton VS. Phoenix Wright, has recently surfaced on the Internet following its unveiling at the Tokyo Game Show 2011.
The game is the result a collaboration between Level 5 inc and Capcom and features characters from both game franchises. However, it had previously been suggested that the game might actually be a fabrication - hopefully this trailer will dispel any notions that this game might be a myth!
Japanese Official Trailer shown at TGS 2011
No European release has been announced yet, but the game is scheduled for release in Japan some time in 2012. The game itself will be the first time that either franchise has appeared in 3D. As a result, the graphics will juxtapose the familiar 2D images with 3D ones.
Professor Layton VS. Phoenix Wright looks like a very interesting title. Mini Gamers hopes that a European release date will be confirmed some time in the next few months.

New Suikoden Game Announced For PSP...
Konami has announced that they will be producing a new Suikoden game for the Playstation Portable.
The game was announced at this year's Tokyo Game Show, and its title has roughly been translated into English as Genso Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century.
OFFICIAL JAPANESE TRAILER shown at TGS 2011
In each of the previous Suikoden games, players must attempt to recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny in order to unlock new abilities and bonuses. The games also featured many turn-based battle modes, including one-on-one duels.
However, what marks this new game out from its predecessors is the fact that it is being produced from scratch by a different production team than before, and the game itself seems like a self-contained episode based on - as opposed to a continuation of - the previous games in the series. This means that Suikoden fans could be seeing a lot of new gameplay features alongside the more traditional ones. Only time will tell if this serves to enhance the Suikoden franchise or not.
Genso Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century is still in development and it could be some time before more solid details about the game start to emerge. Watch this space!

Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call Gets November UK Release Date!!!
It has been a long and anxious wait for Professor Layton fans in the UK, but at last a scheduled UK release date for the fourth Professor Layton game, Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call, (AKA the last specter/specter's flute) has finally emerged.
According to the Play.com website, Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call should be heading to UK stores on the 25th November 2011.
In this adventure, the pair seek to uncover the secret of the 'Spectre's Flute', an ancient artifact that is used to summon a Spectre who, it is said, helps to protect a local village from harm...
The game contains many familiar faces from previous Professor Layton games, such as Granny Riddleton, and also introduces a few new characters into the mix, including Professor Layton's new assistant, Emmy Altava.
Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call is exclusive to the Nintendo DS and DSi, but will also provide an interesting interlude before the Professor and Luke make their debut on the 3DS in the fifth game of the series, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle next year.
Mini Gamers is very pleased that the official UK release date has been announced. We are seriously keeping our fingers crossed that the date will not be changed between now and November. Remember to check in with the Mini Gamers blogsite for more news on this game as it develops.

Professor Layton and the Specter's Flute/Last Specter Gets New Title For Its UK Release Date...
*Professor Layton 4 Release Date Announced. CLICK HERE for details...*
Professor Layton is one of a few videogame series to which the question: 'What's in a name?' seems to be of great importance. The previous three games in the series all had different Japanese, American and UK titles, and it now seems that the fourth game is set to continue this trend.
The game was initially released in Japan as Professor Layton and the Specter's Flute. However at E3 2011, a new trailer revealed that the game would also be known as Professor Layton and the Last Specter. The Trailer also revealed a North-American release date of 'Fall 2011'.
However, a recent announcement about the UK release revealed that the fourth Professor Layton game would have a different title yet again. Apparently the UK version of the game will now be known as Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call.
Unfortunately, there is still no specific UK release date yet, although the game is apparently still scheduled for release in the UK some time in late 2011, which means that it will probably hit the shelves in time for the Christmas rush, but this is purely conjecture at the moment.
However, it is now also looking increasingly likely that the long-awaited fifth game in the series, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, which will make its debut on the Nintendo 3DS, will now not reach UK stores until 2012 at the earliest.

Game On: Educational Video Games As A Tool For Learning...
Since the dawn of the home video game era in the late '70s and early '80s , there has been much bad press concerning young children's exposure to violent games, and the possibility that video games might turn children into 'zombies', who are incapable of thinking and behaving outside of their chosen virtual environments.
However, a recent speech given by the British Secretary for Education, Mr. Michael Gove, could be about to change the reputation of videogames forever.
![]() |
| Michael Gove |
Speaking to The Royal Society last week about the future of education, Mr. Gove praised educational videogames as a tool for learning.
In particular, Mr. Gove highlighted the work of british-born mathematician, Marcus du Sautoy, who has developed videogames in order to teach many advanced aspects of mathematics to young schoolchildren.
Mr. Gove said: "When children need to solve equations in order to get more ammo to shoot the aliens, it is amazing how quickly they can learn. I am sure that this field of educational games has huge potential for maths and science teaching."
[sourced from: http://www.education.gov.uk/inthenews/speeches/a00191729/michael-gove-speaks-to-the-royal-society-on-maths-and-science]
Of course, it has to be said that educational videogames are nothing new. The Nintendo DS has many educational titles aimed at young gamers and adults alike.
Nevertheless, Mr. Gove's speech is an indication that the general perception of videogames may at last be changing, and that the value of videogames as an educational tool is now being recognised outside of the gaming community.
HAVE YOUR SAY...
What do you think of Michael Gove's comments?
Do you agree that videogames should be used as a tool in the classroom?
Let us know what you think of this issue by leaving a comment in the comment's box below. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Professor Layton 2011: The Specters' Flute and Mask Of Miracle E3 News...
*Professor Layton 4 UK RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED. CLICK HERE for details*
The above trailer, (which is the same as the Japanese trailer but with no speech and an enhanced musical score,) comes on the back of an American Trademark request filed by Level 5 inc, the videogame developers behind the Professor Layton series.
A set of screenshots for Professor Layton and the Last Specter have been released alongside the new trailer.
The trailer and screenshots end months of speculation about whether the fourth Professor Layton game would actually ever be released outside of Japan.
There has been no specific release date Professor Layton and the Last Specter yet, although some sources are quoting 'Fall 2011' as a possible time-frame for the North-American release of the game.
However, this raises questions about the European release of the fifth Professor Layton game - Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, which is set to debut on the 3DS system in late 2011.
Originally, Mini Gamers reported that the game had been given a July 2011 release date. According to online retailer Zavvi, this has now been changed to the 7th of October 2011.
However, it could be said that the release of the fourth Professor Layton game is somewhat bittersweet for 3DS fans.
If it is true that Professor Layton and the Last Specter is heading to Western shores in the Autumn of this year, it makes the October release of Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle much more unlikely. Unless of course, Level 5 inc choose to release both games simultaneously - one game for the DS/DSi and the other for the new 3DS console? Unfortunately,it is impossible to say at this present time.
Here at Mini Gamers, we are overjoyed to know that a European release for the Professor Layton and the Last Specter has now been confirmed, and we anxiously look forward to its release and the subsequent release of Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle on the 3DS. Hopefully it won't be too long before we have some definite UK release dates.

Legend Of Zelda and Professor Layton 3DS given June/July release dates...
Please note that the PROFESSOR LAYTON INFORMATION HAS BEEN AMMENDED. TO READ THE LATEST PROFFESSOR LAYTON 3DS POST, PLEASE CLICK HERE
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will be the first one to hit the shop shelves. According to Online Retailers Amazon and Zavvi, the game will be released to the UK public on the 17th of June 2011 and will be released in North America two days later.
Ocarina of Time is the fifth game in The Legend of Zelda series, and it was the first game in the series to have characters that were rendered with 3D graphics. Now for the first time, gamers will also be able to enjoy the game with full 3D environments and objects.
There will be a few new features included in the 3DS version, such as the ability to quickly equip items using the touchscreen and using the in-built gyroscope to assist the accuracy of aim with weapons like the slingshot in first-person view.
Mini Gamers is very excited about The Legend of Zelda in 3D. Expect a full review when the game is released to the public in a few months time.
Another gaming favourite, Professor Layton, is also expected to make his 3DS debut this Summer. Zavvi lists the UK release date for Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (3DS) as the 22nd of July 2011.
The game is actually a prequel, set after the events of Professor Layton and the Spectre's Flute (DS/DSi) game. Again, the 3DS game has several new design features in order to take full advantage of the new 3D capabilities.
For example, the typical hand-drawn 2D imagery has been replaced by 3D models of the characters, meaning that players can now examine areas in a 3D perspective. Furthermore, some of the game's puzzles will also use other 3DS functions such as the motion sensor.
Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (3DS) has proven to be one of the best-selling 3DS launch games in Japan, and sold in excess of 117,589 copies on its first day alone. Mini Gamers suspects that it will be just as popular when it reaches the UK.
As with other games, release dates are often subject to change and there is an unfortunate possibility that one or both of these games may yet be delayed before the stated release date has occurred. Nevertheless, it certainly looks like 3DS gamers could be enjoying these fantastic titles before the end of the Summer.
Remember to check in with the Mini Gamers blogsite over the next few months for more news about these fantastic 3DS titles as it happens.
